Academic Programs

Indiana University offers the following graduate programs related to bioinformatics and computational biology.

Ph.D. programs

Ph.D. in Computer Science

• • The Ph.D. program in Computer Science requires selection of a Ph.D. minor. We offer a minor in Bioinformatics that requires taking INFO-I519 (Introduction to Bioinformatics), INFO-I529 (Machine Learning in Bioinformatics), and two additional courses approved by the program director.

Ph.D. in Informatics, Bioinformatics track

• • The Ph.D. program in Informatics includes a Bioinformatics track. In addition to core Informatics classes, the requirements of this track roughly equal the requirements of the Bioinformatics minor. Students in the Bioinformatics track typically select minors in Biology, Computer Science, or Statistics. See the requirements

Ph.D. in Biology

• • The Ph.D. program in Biology requires selection of a Ph.D. minor. We offer a minor in Bioinformatics that requires taking INFO-I519 (Introduction to Bioinformatics), INFO-I529 (Machine Learning in Bioinformatics), and two additional courses approved by the program director.

M.S. programs

Master’s in Bioinformatics

• • Thirty-six credit hour program, of which the last six credit hours are a year-long Capstone project. Two courses are mandatory: INFO-519 (Introduction to Bioinformatics) and INFO-I529 (Machine Learning in Bioinformatics). See the requirements.

Master’s in Computer Science

• • Thirty credit hour program in Computer Science allows a student to select bioinformatics and computational biology classes across the IU campus. Two courses are mandatory: CSCI-B501 (Theory of Computing) or CSCI-B503 (Algorithms Design and Analysis), and CSCI-B536 (Advanced Operating Systems).
